Councillor Adds Pressure to Bernardo Transfer

Mona Patel asking for letter to be sent to federal government concerning killer's transfer to medium security

Relentless pressure keeps mounting to have killer Paul Bernardo returned to maximum security prison, after he was moved to a medium security prison by Corrections Canada.

During Niagara Falls' Tuesday meeting, Councillor Mona Patel asked for a letter to be sent to the federal government for the change.

She says individuals like this must never see the outside of a maximum security prison.  "I refuse to say his name more than once, sorry... I would encourage every municipality in the region to send a letter to the authorities, because we will only return him if every municipality joins the cause."

City staff say it can be approved at the next meeting, joining Thorold, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls Conservative MP Tony Baldinelli in the fight.

Patel adds she wasn't here when Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy were murdered in the early 90s, but she's heard so many stories.

"For me, as being the mother of two girls, I can't imagine any family going through this, especially re-living the events of the recent prison transfer.  That is why the public must not forget and keep those girls faces and memories alive in their heart," she says.

The Canadian Press has learned it may never be debated in Ottawa if the Liberal government doesn't move it up its priority list.
