Council Weighs Options to Prevent Another Spill

This is to make sure treatment plant keeps working after 30-million litres of sewage went into Lake Erie

Niagara Regional council is mulling over options to make sure 30-million litres of sewage never spills into Lake Erie again.

It happened during a heavy winter storm just before Christmas at the Crystal Beach Treatment plant.

Councillor Bob Gale says options include a wind breaker protecting the generator to keep power going, as well as enabling cell phone roaming for workers at the plant.  "I guess the tower went down in Crystal Beach, during the storm, so they didn't have communication.  However, there was no one at the plant that night, they knew at the Welland monitoring station that it went out."

He adds another option is battery power should another storm knock out hydro.

The councillor also says workers were scheduled to be there in anticipation of a looming storm, but that changed due to Christmas.

"You didn't get the extra staff, and you knew a real bad storm was coming, with 2 days notice.... under the Emergency Act, we can force staff to stay there.  I don't like doing that, but in this case it would've been a wise choice," he says.

Council is also considering workers using 2-way radios.
