Council Hears Concerns Over Condo Plan

Residents say condo units will add to congestion on Carlton Avenue

Niagara Falls city council is wrestling with a proposed condo development on Carlton Avenue.

During its meeting Tuesday night, concerned residents spoke of traffic, parking and congestion issues.

However, Councilor Lori Lococo pointed out they have provincial and regional guidelines to follow, along with city staff recommendations.

"I really feel for the residents, but these are our guidelines, and I don't know what to do.  Especially about the parking, because I'm seeing it happen over and over again.  We can see some of our new developments that have parking issues, but yet they fit within the guidelines of what we're supposed to do," she says.

City staff revealed they are looking at other options to address traffic concerns.

Director of Planning Kira Dolch pointed out the city's municipal works division has looked into this.   "Transportation staff said that Carlton Avenue can accommodate the traffic generated from this site.  Sanitary can accommodate the development, but there is need for extension of storm sewer development."

Residents said they feel the area cannot handle further congestion.  City staff said council has already approved the application, and to delay it further, for example, by looking at reducing the number of units in the condo, would require the assistance of lawyers.
