Competition Bureau Examining Grocery Sector As Food Prices Continue to Rise

Competition watchdog launching a study of grocery store competition across the country.

The Competition Bureau is looking into grocery store competition in Canada.

A study has been launched to examine how governments could fight back against price increases at stores, by using more competition.

Many factors are thought to be behind the jump in the price of food, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine, higher input costs, supply chain disruptions and extreme weather.

The agency says the study will consider how prices may be impacted by changing competitive dynamics, what lessons can be learned from other countries, and how governments can lower barriers to increase competition.

The Bureau says it will engage with numerous stakeholder during the study, including industry experts, all levels of government and grocery retailers of all sizes.

Experts say grocery prices in Canada are increasing at the fastest rate seen in 40 years.
