The City is considering installing an inflated air dome over the courts at Community Park

The City of St. Catharines wants to hear from residents about plans to install an inflated air dome over tennis courts at Community Park.

The City says this will give residents a comfortable place to play during the winter, and the dome will be taken down from May 1st until September 30th.

Other groups involved include Tennis Clubs of Canada (TCC), the Merritton Lions Club and the St. Catharines Tennis Alliance.

The TCC is the proposed operator of the new facility, and they will be responsible for all operational costs.

They operate eight others across Ontario, including one that is currently being installed in Niagara Falls.

Potential revenue for the City is pegged at $10,000 - $15,000 a year.

"City staff, the St. Catharines Tennis Alliance, Tennis Clubs of Canada, and the Merritton Lions Club have been working collaboratively over the last year to make this project a reality," says Eric Lamothe, manager of business planning and strategic services for the City. "The new dome is a wonderful opportunity to turn the soon-to-be renovated tennis court into a more accessible and inclusive facility for residents to enjoy year-round."

Plans include giving members and non-members a wide variety of activities, including round robins, house leagues and tournaments.

Tennis will be the main focus, but there will be temporary pickleball lines at nets at various times.

As well, public information sessions will take place on May 23rd from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Merritton Community Centre in St. Catharines.

A report will be sent to council after consultations, and if approved, the indoor tennis dome is expected to open by fall 2024.
