City Needs Help to Assist Asylum Seekers

Niagara Falls mayor says people lose hotel rooms for eclipse as government books them

The Mayor of Niagara Falls is not giving up in pushing the federal government for more help in assisting asylum seekers to the city.

Jim Diodati says the city has been trying to come up with solutions with the federal government while asylum seekers are housed in hotels.

He's also looking at what was happening for eclipse day.  "People who had booked these hotels expecting that they'd be enjoying the eclipse, no longer have a booking.  But it's what happens when you've got thousands of asylum seekers in your city, and the federal government is doing a direct negotiation with the hotels, they by-pass the municipality."

The mayor adds a better plan is needed to help everyone that is arriving.

"It's starting to cause negative PR, when people are not being allowed to rent rooms, and this is where I've been asking for quite some time for more 2-way dialogue on solutions.  I don't need someone to tell me decisions, we need to be part of discussions."

He adds Niagara Falls does more per capita than any other Canadian city to help asylum seekers, and will continue to do so.
