5 Storey Apartment Complex Considered for Dorchester Road

Large group of citizens opposed address Council tonight

If you've driven down Dorchester Road, south of Lundy’s Lane, in Niagara Falls recently you may have seen some signs along the roadway asking city council to say NO to a 5 storey apartment building.

The proposal, which would house 74 units, is set to go before council tonight.

It is the latest development application for a parcel of property that has been before Niagara Falls City Council on multiple occasions over the past 20 years, often being met with opposition from the owners of the nearby well-established single family homes.

This time is no different, with a large number of local residents sending in letters of opposition.  In addition, a petition calls for the  2008 zoning by-law to be maintained, which proposed  8 townhouse units and 4 single detached dwellings.

The applicant, Angelo Butera, principle of Dorchester Property Holdings Inc., has experience in the area, previously developing the 4 and 5 storey, 154 unit apartment complex on the former Diamond Jubilee school property, which is also located adjacent to the two-lane Dorchester Road.

City staff, however, is recommending approval of the application, indicating it meets with the City’s Official Plan, along with Provincial and Regional policies, and will diversify the City’s housing supply.
