City Considers Train Re-routing: Mayor

Jim Diodati says that's an option, to deal with trains moving through the city

City of Niagara Falls is considering two options when it comes to how trains move through or around the city.

Councillor Lori Lococo brought the matter up during last council meeting, during a vote on proclaiming Rail Safety week.

She notes a train recently was stopped for about an hour within the city, causing traffic headaches.

She asked the mayor what's being done about something council has been working on for years with CP and CN.

Jim Diodati says they could build three overpasses, among the dozen that are in the city, each overpass costing at least $30-million.

The other option is re-routing.  "Traditionally, historically, they used to cross in Niagara Falls, and go into Niagara Falls, New York.   Well, once CP sold their tracks, they sold the bridge, that no longer happens.  So, now, through a dozen crossings, they come through the city, they meander."

For the time being, council is waiting on a multi-billion dollar train deal before it can consider re-routing.

The mayor had an update on that.  "We got a little bit held up because CP is in the process of buying Kansas City South, a major railway in the US that goes right down to the Gulf of Mexico.   I can tell you that we have been in touch with some of the senior people involved in the transaction."

The mayor adds unfortunately these types of transactions move at glacial speed.
