City Aims to Help Single Parent Families

Niagara Falls looking at Level Up program, helping individuals rise above barriers related to poverty

Single parent families facing poverty could get some help should a program with the City of Niagara Falls get underway.

The city's Chief Administrative Officer Jason Burgess says it's called Level Up, that tries to address the barriers holding people back.

The next step is potential work with the city, or others.  "I can go to a Niagara Parks Commission, I can go to an E.S. Fox, some of the other employers and say 'You take on 2', and if I can get 10 employers, that's 20... 50 employers, that's 100 individuals off of it, and not just those individuals, but also the children."

He added the city will spend the next year looking further into the details.

He admits this is not a new idea.

"The difference with today, where before, all you would say is for people to just get a job... that solution doesn't work for people who face barriers of poverty.  They need the job, plus they need to be able to address the barriers, and this is why we wanted to do that."

He says the goal, through private and public investment, is finding work with the city and private companies.
