Citizen's Code of Conduct on Horizon

Niagara Regional council votes to examine idea further, after hearing of abuse against many councillors

A unanimous vote at Niagara Regional council to look further into a citizen's code of conduct.

The motion was brought forth by Fort Erie Mayor Wayne Redekop, after a number of councillors have described and talked about online and in-person harrassment from the public.

Port Colborne Mayor Bill Steele added his wife and kids have seen what he's dealt with.

"What I find is these people are gutless, and they can't come up to me face to face and tell me why they're made at me, or what I'm doing wrong. They can sit there in their mother's basement that they live in, and type all day long about Bill Steele, but they don't have the guts to come up to me face to face," he says.

He noted the number people who will not run for politics due to the abuse.

The Fort Erie Mayor adds some people think there's no limits to their freedom of expression.

"But the problem is there are limits.  Everyone has rights, everyone has freedoms, and we're all entitled to do certain things.   When they clash, then that's the limit.  And when people are threatening others, that is not appropriate behaviour."

The motion asks for greater police involvement as well.
