Canadian Tourism Expected to See Big Boost this Year

A new report suggests Canada can expect more overseas travelers this year

Some positive news for Niagara's tourism industry.

The World Travel and Tourism Council says Canada's biggest cities can expect a big rebound in the number of overseas visitors this year.

The agency is predicting the industry will pump over $162 billion into the economy, which is about 17 percent higher than last year.

If this is achieved, about 90,000 new jobs could be created.

Last year, overseas travelers spent about $23 billion in Canada, which was 64 percent higher than in 2021.

Council president Julia Simpson says she expects this trend to continue.

``The sector is a vital driver of economic growth and job creation in Canada, with cities such as Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal remaining must-see global destinations for international visitors."

In Canada, hospitality and transportation businesses were among those most hurt by the pandemic, as borders were closed and restrictions were placed on travel and restaurant dining.

The Council estimates that by 2023, Canada's tourism sector will employ 2.1 million people, and its contribution to the GDP will be about $240 million
