Burch and Gates Discuss Thorold Tunnel in Ontario Legislature

The Thorold tunnel was one of the topics brought up in the Ontario Legislature yesterday.

Niagara Centre MPP Jeff Burch and Niagara Falls MPP Wayne Gates talked about an alleged plan to close two-way traffic through the tunnel.

Burch says switching the tunnel to one-way traffic is not a good idea.

"One-way traffic through the Thorold tunnel for the foreseeable future is not a solution; it creates a myriad of other issues and will result in major disruptions. Is the minister prepared to listen to local elected officials and take the necessary steps to maintain the current traffic configuration in order to ensure our community is safe, accessible and moving efficiently?"

Gates is worried about the impact it would have on the community.

"We have had local business owners tell us this is a disaster for business, residents tell us about the hardships this will cause and local elected officials are demanding a meeting to get answer about when the Ministry knew the tunnel was unsafe."

The Ministry of Transportation released the following statement when we asked them about the alleged plan.

"The ministry is reviewing the current situation and finalizing its plan. We will share it with the travelling public shortly."

More than 24,000 vehicles use tunnel every day.
