City councillor says it's needed for future Hunter's Point residential development
It could be several months to a year or two before the City of Welland hears from a Toronto developer about a Highway 406 overpass to a proposed development.
Councillor Byran Green says they're requiring the developer, who owns the property at the former Hunter's Point Golf Course, to build a $20-million overpass.
He adds they don't want this on taxpayers. "You now have to fund a $20-million overpass. So, this overpass really services the development. Someone living in another area of the city will never use this overpass, unless they're visiting someone in Hunter's Point."
He says at the moment there's only one access. "And there's a railway line that crosses there. Now, there's not 10 trains a day, but if there's even a few trains traversing there in a week, if one of those trains happen to break down, there's no access into the community."
The councillor says the developer can appeal to the Ontario Land Tribunal against the overpass.
The developer can also apply to have more residential units built to cushion the price of the overpass.
