Rob Axiak went for an International Downtown Association Conference, brainstorming ways to bring people to Welland's downtown
Different ideas being weighed by the City of Welland on how to revitalize the downtown.
Chief Administrative Officer Rob Axiak was in Seattle for the International Downtown Association conference recently, discussing ways to bring people to the downtown.
He says they need more events, such as the Rose Festival, or performances with Concerts on the Canal. "It's bringing more of that diversity or cultural element to our downtown, because our community is changing. We have new coming people that are coming in with new cultures, and we're starting to evolve to that."
He also says they need to make the downtown feel more safe, and... it's not just about more police officers, but better lighting.
"That is inviting, that looks attractive, that doesn't have any of these dark spaces, any of those dark alley places... how do we leverage those places to become something new or creative, to allow people to come in in a new way
He anticipates this will be brought to council's attention late this year or early next year.
