Land at the old Newman Steel site will be handed to the region
Unanimous support at Welland city council for construction of a 78-unit affordable housing complex at 184 Denistoun Street.
The city is handing the property, an old parking lot from Newman Steel, over to Niagara Regional housing at no cost.
Councillor Leo Van Vliet pointed out this is what happens when government works together. "I've sat on the Affordable Housing Committee, for many years, and I have to say there were times when I'd think 'What are we doing here?' There seemed to be at times we were getting absolutely nowhere."
Councillor John Chiocchio was all smiles as he flipped through some figures.
"A bachelor unit at $456, a one bedroom at $456, a 2-bedroom at $731, so, the price is right where it's supposed to be to make these things affordable."
City staff say construction is expected to start sometime next year, and suggest the region apply for Community Improvement Plan programs, considering where the site is.
