Police say grandparent scams are on the rise, as criminals appeal to "family holiday" theme
With Christmas right around the corner, there's another warning from police for seniors to be careful of scams.
Police say there's been a rise of what they call grandparent scams, particularly in the north end of St. Catharines.
There's been at least five attempts over the last week and one victim lost $6,000.
Police say the scam involves a phone call saying a loved one, such as a grandchild, is in legal trouble, and the only way to bail them out is sending cash or gift cards.
Police add these criminals may increase their efforts during the holiday season, appealing to a ``family holiday'' theme to add pressure.
