It's to transform landfill waste into energy to heat over 8,700 homes
Thorold's mayor says a $50-million project is ready to go at Walker Industries that'll refine landfill organic waste or gas.
Terry Ugulini joined Niagara Falls mayor Jim Diodati in 2020 as construction began, and last week celebrated the opening of the facility on Townline Road. "This renewable natural gas plant refines landfill gas into a low carbon renewable natural gas, that'll be injected into the Enbridge Gas distribution network."
The mayor adds methane gas is produced as garbage decomposes, and that's the energy they are harnessing.
Energy produced by the plant will be able to heat over 8,700 homes, done in conjunction between Walker Industries, Comcor Environmental and Enbridge Gas.
"They put it through this new R+G plant, which refines it, takes out all the impurities, makes it to a level because to go into the Enbridge gas lines, it has to be pure methane."
