Doctrine allowed for seizure of land from Indigenous people.
The Vatican has formally repudiated the 15th-century ``Doctrine of Discovery.''
The documents legitimized the colonial-era seizure of lands from Canada's Indigenous people.
In a statement, the Vatican says the papal decrees did not adequately reflect the equal dignity and rights of Indigenous peoples.
It also notes the documents had been manipulated by colonial powers to justify immoral acts.
In its 2015 report, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission made the repudiation of the doctrine one of its 94 calls to action.
