Smoke fills downtown core
Residents living on Yates Street in St. Catharines are being asked to shelter in place due to a major fire on Ontario Street.
Flames broke out in the former Welland House Hotel on Ontario and King early this morning, gutting the historic building.
The city is asking residents who live downwind to shelter in place, close all windows and doors, turn off the furnace, air conditioners and other exhaust systems and close all vents and dampers.
Road closures are also in effect.
Motorists will be unable to access Ontario St. from Church to St. Paul, King Street between Ontario St. and Queen St., and William St.
