Councillor Sentence's motion is to show the province Thorold works well, amalgamation is not needed
The City of Thorold ordering its staff to review all potential compositions and sizes of city council.
Councillor Ken Sentence got his motion passed, saying he wants Thorold to stay Thorold, as the spectre of amalgamation has never left.
Councillor Henry D'Angela referred to the newly amalgamated Niagara transit. "It was moderately costing us... it went into an amalgamated transit system, and take a look at your tax bill, we're getting hammered. And the rate increase in transit is exponential, they're just running it differently and spending a lot more money."
Councillor Sentence added this is to show the province the value of municipal government, while Councillor D'Angela added the province can impose amalgamation at any time.
Councillor Nella Dekker said other municipalities want to join them. "We have probably more money than other city around us. I don't want to amalgamate with anyone else either, because I want to stay as the City of Thorold, because to me, that's why I live in Thorold, that's why I'm on council, I want to do great things for Thorold."
Councillor Jim Handley noted the real problem is the regional government, and duplication there.
