Jennie Stevens is calling on the Ford Government, to stop renovictions in Niagara and across the province.
The NDP MPP for St. Catharines says some landlords have been forcing tenants out of their homes.
She says they will use renovations as an excuse, and jack up the rent afterwards.
Stevens says the government has scrapped rent control on new units, creating an environment which encourages landlords to do this.
During Question Period in the legislature yesterday, she spoke about a 76-year-old man from St. Catharines.
She says Kenneth Gogo is a cancer patient, and he is now facing eviction after living in his apartment for over 20-years.
He currently pays $720 per month for his 500-square-foot bachelor apartment.
He won’t be able to afford another apartment in his building, because the units are double the price he’s currently paying.
