Stevens Critical of Housing Task Force Recommendations

MPP Jennie Stevens says Housing Task Force recommendations don't go far enough.

St. Catharines MPP Jennie Stevens is calling on the Premier to pass a housing policy when legislature resumes to help local families now.

Stevens says the Housing Task Force recommendations don't address problems young families are currently facing in the housing market.

"I think what we're seeing are suggested actions now trying to move quicker on increasing the housing supply with positive policy inclusions like zoning reform that the NDP has been calling for.  But It is disappointing and potentially dangerous that the task force said nothing about demand-side housing issues," says Stevens. "We are leaving out real people in this plan, if all we end up doing is incentivizing developers to buy and build more, and provide nothing to protect vulnerable tenants like seniors, or policy to allow first time home buyers to compete against corporations for homes."

Stevens says her office is being contacted by residents who are being evicted to accommodate renovation plans by the owners, only to find the same units advertised at a higher rent.

She is calling on Premier Doug Ford to come up with a plan to build more affordable homes, help first-time buyers with the down payment, and protect tenants from bad landlords.

Earlier this week, the province's housing affordability task force released a list of recommendations.

The recommendations include a goal of building 1.5 million homes in the next decade by increasing density in urban and suburban areas, as well as changes to how cities approve housing projects.
