The NDP MPP for St. Catharines is calling on the Ford Government to protect legion branches at risk of closing due to the pandemic.
Jennie Stevens wrote a letter to Premier Doug Ford about this a few months ago but she never received a response.
Ford has suggested that these legions apply for the Seniors Community Grant but Stevens says they need money to cover operational costs, not program support.
She also says these legions support veterans of all ages, not just seniors.
Doly Begum, the NDP MPP for Scarborough Southwest, says 357 legion branches are feeling the financial impacts of the pandemic and 124 of them will likely have to close their doors for good.
Begum is also a legion member.
