St. Catharines Man Arrested After Ramming Police Cruisers

A man from St. Catharines is facing numerous charges after ramming two police cruisers.

Around 5:40 PM yesterday, officers were called to the area of Hillview Street and Tunis Street regarding a suspicious car.

A black, 2005 four door Acura TSX was parked at the side of the road with the keys in the ignition.

The male driver and female passenger were asleep and showing signs of possible drug use.

The officer parked the police cruiser behind the Acura and tried to speak with the driver, who provided a fake name.

During the investigation, the driver suddenly reversed, hit the cruiser and sped off.

A brief pursuit took place, but quickly discontinued out of concern for public safety.

The car was spotted by an officer in a marked police car at 6:24 PM  in a parking lot near Pelham Road and 5th Street Louth in St. Catharines.

The male was still driving and the female was still in the passenger seat.

The officer parked behind the Acura, which again reversed and hit the cruiser.

It rammed into the cruiser repeatedly in an attempt to escape, and the officer tried to arrest the man when the Acura became inoperable.

The driver continued hitting the accelerator, causing the tires to spin in place.

As a result, a large smoke cloud occurred and the Acura caught on fire.

The man refused to leave the car and had to be physically removed and arrested.

Damage to the two police cruisers is estimated to be about $12,000, and the Acura was destroyed.

No officers or civilians were injured during the incident.

The man was taken to hospital for assessment, and was taken to NRPS Prisoner Management in the Falls upon release.

Thirty-three year old Jonathon William Kell was arrested and faces several charges.

The woman was initially arrested, and was later released without charges.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call detectives at 905-688-4111, extension 1024233.
