St. Catharines Exploring Alcohol in Parks

Councillor says if passes, as Toronto is doing, likely wouldn't happen until next year

There's a chance you might be able to open a cold adult beverage in St. Catharines public parks.

City councillor Greg Miller has asked staff to explore the idea, something Toronto is already doing, without many complaints filed.

Councillor Jackie Lindal noted the differences between the two cities.  "But I don't know how this would apply in St. Catharines, where we have a lot of greenspace, not as condensed as Toronto is, where there might need to be, as Greg says, a need to go to parks for a drink."

She says she hasn't received any feedback from anyone since staff was asked to look into this.

This likely wouldn't come close to happening until next summer.

Criteria include not being near a playground, schools, or pools, and have washrooms and drinking water.  "How much more pressure is it going to put on Niagara Regional police?  How much more pressure is it going to put on municipal works?  Because you're going to have to supply recycling bins, and garbage bins in the parks, and pick them up."
