Council is interested in repurposing a downtown police station to develop affordable housing.
The station is currently located on Church Street, but a new one is being constructed on Welland Avenue.
The St. Catharines Standard reports that at Monday's council meeting, a motion to ask city staff to discuss their interest and ideas for the land with the Region was passed.
Council also asked for a staff report regarding the formation of a municipal land development corporation.
Councilor Karrie Porter has been pushing for such a corporation, saying there are others that have managed to create opportunities for more affordable housing.
