Councillor Insinna wants stats sent to Premier Doug Ford as province sets to get rid of them
The Niagara Region is holding steady in using speed cameras, as it waits for the Ontario government's decision on if they'll be eliminated.
Director of Transportation Frank Tassone says they're looking at closed circuit cameras to deal with vandalism, and one person has so far been arrested.
As for the program's success, he says it's evident. "The measurement of success for the program is the declining number of charges, and declining revenue, which shows that driver behaviour is changing. And, we've seen an 86% drop in the number of violations issued."
Councillor Tom Insinna wants those details sent to Premier Doug Ford in support of the cameras.
As for complaints about lack of warning signs in speed zones, Councillor Rob Foster pointed to Mountain Street in Beamsville. "There's 17 differing pieces of painting, of signs, of everything basically telling people to slow down. So, it's not like we're not giving appropriate warnings to people."
