Niagara Falls city council votes in favour of $30-million contribution
A lone Niagara Falls city councillor the only vote against the city contributing $30-million to the new South Niagara hospital.
Lori Lococo is not pleased with the amount Niagara Falls taxpayers will hand over, while other cities and towns in the Niagara region have not committed anything yet, except Fort Erie's $3-million.
"It's not a Niagara Falls hospital, it's a regional hospital, and other municipalities are going to be using it. Our Niagara Falls residents will not be given prime seniority to use the services," she says.
However, Councillor Ruth-Ann Nieuwesteeg pointed out we need better health care, and it shouldn't come down to 'if they don't pay, then we won't'.
Councillor Mike Strange was focused on growth of the area. "We see already the development around it. We just approved a subdivision development behind it, that included secondary dwellings, tiny houses.... and this is where it's all going. It's all going to the south end surrounded by this hospital, so development is going to be paying for development here."
Mayor Jim Diodati acknowledged health care is not cheap, but when you lose your health, you'll do anything to get it back.
