Rescue Team Anticipating Busy Season

South Shore Search and Rescue reminds trouble while boating can happen to anyone

A reminder if you like to get out on the lake to be mindful of conditions and make sure equipment is working properly.

Doug Mepham is with South Shore Search and Rescue, and says they're anticipating a busy season, with ten rescues by end of June, last year they did 31.

He adds it doesn't matter how long anyone has been boating.  "It's a reminder that anyone can have a problem out there.  It doesn't take much experience out in the middle of the lake to realize how vulnerable you are.  And, even if you're experienced, that this can happen to experienced people, it's a reminder this can happen to all of us."

Unit leader Ben Upper adds they've already been called out to a variety of problems, indicating a likely busy season.

Mepham says there's a lengthy list of reasons why people get into trouble.

But, he still welcomes more people getting into boating, kayaking or paddleboarding.  "But that comes with a responsiblity to learn, starting with weather, to understand a weather forecast, to look at the wind, and understand the wind and where it's going to place you in a small boat, should things go horribly wrong."
