Commissioner to look into David Bylsma's decision to attend anti lockdown protest
Niagara regional council has agreed to ask its Integrity Commissioner to investigate the actions of one of its members.
The move comes after West Lincoln Mayor David Bylsma attended an anti lockdown rally earlier this month in St. Catharines.
He has since received a court summons for violating COVID-19 restrictions on large gatherings.
Last night council not only voted to have the chair ask the commissioner to investigate they also agreed to issue a joint statement on the matter.
In the release, council notes " Those who hold elected office are seen as leaders within their municipalities and should conduct themselves in a way that maintains and promotes the public’s trust."
Councillors pointing out in their role as Niagara’s Board of Health, they are responsible for upholding all relevant provincial legislation.
The release concludes, "all members of council, without exception, are expected to follow all federal, provincial and municipal statutes at all times and educate themselves on all relevant policies and legislation, and conduct themselves in a way that does not contravene the law."
