Region Working to Improve Traffic Lights: Mayor

Niagara Falls city council hearing about roads and intersections brought to its attention

Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati reassuring city council that the region and the city are working together to improve how traffic lights work.

That came up during council meeting last night, when Councillor Tony Baldinelli pointed to many intersections of which he hears from residents all the time.

"Especially when coming off the highway from Fort Erie, onto Mcleod Road, and you already have traffic from the light, all the way to that light, all the way back to the other light, and people coming off from Fort Erie cannot get on," he says.

Councillor Lori Lococo also read to her colleagues an email from the region that work is being done, particularly on McLeod Road by the Walmart.

Baldinelli again referred to McLeod Road and Stanley Avenue.  "We have a city that's growing, we have so many cars, backing up on traffic lights, when no other traffic is coming on the thru section.  They [staff] have to do what they're supposed to be doing, and that's their job."

Mayor Jim Diodati says the region is working on solutions such as sensory lights to change for traffic that's not waiting for anything, or flashing red at night.  He also said cameras that take pictures of drivers choosing to speed are coming.  They are used in other jurisdictions, where a monetary penalty is sent to the owner of the vehicle, and not the driver, with no points involved on a driver's record.
