Region to be Asked to Review Speed Cameras

Some Welland councillors praised the cameras, others relayed driver complaints

Welland city council voting to ask the region to review the automated speed cameras it put up around the region, including on Rice Road.

Councillor David McLeod says many people are getting multiple tickets a month after driving past a camera, one person received a ticket over $1,000.

He also pointed to frustration some feel after getting a ticket for doing 53 in a 50 zone.  "If there was a police officer there, pulling people over, it would have an immediate impact on the person who got pulled over, that you're likely not going to see them do the same thing for quite some time, and everybody that's driving by doesn't want to be that person, so they're behaving as well."

However, Councillor Leo Van Vliet says the cameras slow drivers down, and someone doing 70 in a 40 zone deserves a ticket.

Councillor John Chiocchio couldn't understand why this was being discussed, indicating the cameras are doing what they're meant to... slow people down.  He adds some parents are glad their kids got a ticket for speeding.  "I've been down the road probably 3 times this week, and it's never been slower, and it's a beautiful thing.  Please, come put some in Ward 3, on Webber Road in South Pelham, where people are drag racing."

Mayor Frank Campion reminded everyone if you get a ticket, you can go to the courthouse and challenge it.

Councillor McLeod's motion passed.
