The Royal Family says the monarch died peacefully at her Scottish estate this afternoon.

Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96.

In a statement, the royal family says she died peacefully earlier today at her Scottish estate, Balmoral Castle.

The news comes after Buckingham Palace announced that her doctors were worried about her health.

She was the longest reigning monarch in British history, and was also the Canadian head of state.

The queen leaves behind four children, eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, many of whom were by her side when she passed.

Recently, she had been forced to ditch numerous public engagements, including some held over the summer to mark her 70 years on the throne.

The death of the queen means her 73 year old son Charles will take over the throne, though it's not yet known when the coronation will take place.
