Labour Minister says the $672,700 will help fill huge labour shortage, providing paid work placements in Niagara
If you're considering a career as an electrician, the Niagara Region and provincial government may have something for you.
The province is investing $672,700 to train workers for highly in-demand careers in Niagara.
Minister of Labour David Piccini joined Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff in Niagara Falls yesterday, saying with the province facing the largest labour shortage in a generation, they're creating training opportunities for well-paying jobs.
It's done through the Job Readiness Program, recently providing 16 apprentices with not only training, but also financial, budgeting, and paid work placements on jobsites across Niagara.
The money comes from the Skills Development Fund, and will help the local chapter of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers train more electricians.
In the 4th quarter of last year, the government says there were almost 1,500 job vacancies for electricians province-wide.
The Ontario government adds almost 500,000 additional workers will be needed in skilled trades over the next decade.
