The provincial government has announced an investment of $200 million to assist the tourism and hospitality sectors.
The money includes $100 million for a one-time Ontario Tourism and Hospitality Small Business Support Grant, and another $100 million for a one-time recovery program.
Premier Doug Ford made the announcement today in Niagara Falls.
"The tourism industry is critical to Ontario's economy and we are providing significant financial support to ensure this sector will be able to survive the pandemic and contribute to our recovery. These tourism operators and businesses employ local people throughout the province and typically attract visitors from around the world. Our government will continue to have their backs during this difficult time."
Tourism generated over $36 billion to the Ontario economy and supported 400,000 jobs in the province before the pandemic.
Small businesses including hotels, amusement parks, travel agencies and vacation camps can get between $10,000 and $20,000 as part of the Ontario Tourism and Hospitality Small Business Grant.
In order to get the grant, businesses must have less than 100 employees and demonstrate that they have experienced at least a 20 percent decline in revenue.
Establishments that received the Ontario Small Business Support Grant will not be eligible to receive this grant.
Minister MacLeod says the money is necessary to help tourism and hospitality businesses survive.
"This has been the most challenging year the tourism industry has ever faced. Previously an economic powerhouse for the province, tourism has been hit by the triple threat that COVID-19 represents - a health, economic and social crisis. This critical funding will sustain regionally significant businesses, while protecting jobs in communities that rely on tourism investment."
In addition, the Ontario Tourism Recovery Program will provide assistance to established businesses in these sectors.
Examples of eligible businesses include resorts, tour boat operators, and tourist attractions.
