There's also talk of selling it to the city for $2, once the South Niagara hospital opens in 2028
There's a chance the Port Colborne hospital could be leased by the city from Niagara Health.
A packed city council chamber of residents on Tuesday heard that, along with possibly selling the hospital to the city for $2 once the South Niagara hospital opens.
Niagara Health President Lynn Guerriero added the primary care teams proposed at the new hospitals will be better service than the urgent care centres offered. "What you experience there, as far as after hours coverage, or weekend coverage, and same day or next day access to a doctor when you are sick and need it, that is the promise of the Ontario family health team, when the group is large enough."
There's also a chance the City of Port Colborne will contribute $6.2-million to the South Niagara hospital.
Dr. Matt Vandenberg wants to open a primary care team at Port Colborne hospital.
He told the crowd it would be better than the urgent care centre. "We have been in talk with specialists, general internal medicine doctors, about doing local visits, so that we can send complex medical care patients down the hall, instead of across the city, or province, or over to Hamilton."
He adds they want to amalgamate the city's two small medical clinics into one, meaning better access to patient records.
