A tenth grade student at Lakeshore Catholic High School presented Port Care with a $5,000 cheque today.
Kyla Payne received the money as a prize after writing about the charity for her Youth Philanthropy Initiative project.
Payne says the work Port Cares does inspired her to write about the charity.
"The work you do for the community made it an easy choice for me to write about for this project. My paper looked at the poverty in the community and how your organization helps in so many ways for those in-need."
Every year, YPI Canada grants hundreds of thousands of dollars to charities, with organizations chosen by students participating in the youth philanthropy project.
Kyla's donation will be used towards the food bank and meal program at the Port Cares Reach Out Centre.
