Pelham Asked to Help with Hospital Build

Niagara Health made presentation to council today, asking for $5.8-million

Pelham taxpayers have been asked to fork over $5.8-million to help with construction of the South Niagara hospital.

Niagara Health told council this morning the price has gone up, but Niagara Health is not passing that increase to Pelham.

CEO Lynn Guerriero added they are looking at payment options.  "We're looking at extending those payments over a longer period of time, so that it gives us more time to raise the funds, and have our Foundation work with us.  And the conversations with the government are live, and on-going."

Niagara Health showed the initial 2017 cost for the South Niagara build was $2.3-billion, it was $3.6-billion in 2023.

Council voted for town staff to review the request, with a vote to come later.

The hospital CEO added they won't ask again for this hospital, but they could be back for Welland.  "We are talking to the government about a small renovation, which is just to cope with the fact that we are needing different use of that space in 2028, once the South Niagara site opens.  But, we are also talking to government about a bigger expansion of Welland, more of a redevelopment, instead of a renovation."
