The region did a survey of local businesses, but Stats Canada data more reliable
We're getting an idea as to how Niagara businesses are doing, in particular over the last five years.
The region's economic development manager Blake Landry revealed a local survey, and found ebbs and flows in the number of people employed.
In 2018, there were over 98,700 full-time jobs, last year there were almost 96,000. "We're still actually recovering from the pandemic, where a lot of employment was lost. They bring people back in a part-time capacity, and they eventually transition into a full-time capacity. So, this is consistent with the Stats Canada data."
He added based on this survey, there's nothing to be concerned about with the region's economy, while Stats Canada would have better data.
Urban Planner Cynthia Tia says they also asked area businesses what the region can do to help businesses grow. "In 2024, we received close to 3,000 responses. The largest proportion of comments included business exposure, incentives, grants, contracts, and taxes and utilities. The identified issues are shared with departments at the region."
