St. David's Ratepayer Association concerned about cost, but also safety of pedestrians
People living near York Road and Four Mile Creek Road are not too happy about a proposed roundabout at that intersection.
President of the St. David's Ratepayers Association Dan Segal told the region's public works committee this week they're concerned pedestrians have to find a gap in traffic, but also for kids walking to St. David's public school.
He added businesses are concerned it'll impede traffic to their businesses. "We believe a lot of support for the roundabout appears to come from people living outside our close knit community, who are interested in moving through the community in a quick manner. Whereas we are more interested in a viable village centre, that's conducive to locals walking to and from work and school."
He says they have 875 names on a petition against the roundabout.
They also say the cost could reach $40-million, and putting it where many pedestrians are, including school kids, is not good.
The Association's Past-president Mike Pearsall offered potential solutions. "We think that minor improvements to the existing 4-way stop could serve the traffic needs with potential signals, in maybe a 10-year time. An updated study should be done, that looks at all the traffic through St. David's in a holistic manner, and is not scoped to just 250 metres on either side of the intersection."
They also say this needs land already zoned for mixed commercial/residential in the heart of the village.
