OPP Reminding Residents to Use Safety Equipment this Long Weekend

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says the force is seeing more deaths due to a lack of seatbelts, helmets and lifejackets

If you're heading out this long weekend, the OPP is reminding you to be safe.

OPP Sgt Kerry Schmidt says while aggressive, distracted and impaired driving has gone down, people still need to be reminded to use safety equipment behind the wheel, on the trails and on the water.

"466 people died in the last five years and they were not wearing safety equipment. That should be a message to everyone. Please make sure you have your seatbelt on, your helmet on, your lifejacket on, whatever it is that you're doing."

He's also reminding drivers to keep an eye out for pedestrians, cyclists and vulnerable road users.
