OPP Encouraging You to Safely Ring in the New Year

Residents urged to plan ahead if New Year's celebrations involve alcohol or cannabis.

Ontario Provincial Police are encouraging residents to safely celebrate the new year.

Sergeant Ed Sanchuk says so far this year, 600 people have been charged for impaired driving during the OPP's Festive RIDE campaign.

"I'm absolutely shocked and astounded at the number of people that still get behind the wheel while they're impaired by alcohol or drugs and put all of our safety at risk. So far during the Festive R.I.D.E. campaign, nearly 600 people have been charged with impaired driving offences and over 200 additional drivers have received a roadside suspension and a warning."

If you spot a suspected drunk driver, you're advised to call 911.

You can also plan ahead by having a designated driver, staying overnight, taking a cab, or taking public transportation.
