Ontario Education Workers In Legal Strike Position November 3rd

Conciliator issues a "no board" report.

Ontario education workers will soon be in a legal strike position.

CUPE, the union that represents 55,000 education workers such as custodians, administration staff and early childhood educators, says a conciliator has issued a "no board" report.

This means that the union will be in a legal strike position effective November 3rd.

The union requested the report on October 7th, noting talks between CUPE and the province were at a standstill.

The report set a 17-day countdown towards the union being in a legal strike position, however, CUPE is required to give five days notice if it intends to take any kind of job action.

There is no word yet if workers will go on strike, participate in a work-to-rule campaign or take any other action at this point.

Talks are scheduled to take place this week today through Wednesday.

The government has offered wage bumps of two percent a year for workers earning less than $40,000 a year and 1.25 percent for all other workers.

CUPE is asking for salary increases of 11.7 percent a year.

Education workers have also proposed double the current overtime pay rate, an increase in benefits and 30 minutes of paid preparation time per day for ECEs and educational assistants.
