The police services board approved, for next year's budget, buying 550 cameras for $1.2-million, that's with potential tariffs.
Innovation Manager Rany Audet acknowledged public concern about the cost. "We try to address the concerns as best as we can. Every interaction that I had, and I know everyone that I know who was involved in interactions [with the public], were trying to educate as much as possible that this is not free."
Police stats show 90% of the public feel this will improve transparency, 10% concerned with invasion of privacy.
Corporate analyst Hector Perez addressed concerns victims of domestic violence wouldn't call police for fear of being on camera. "The evidence is really needed to proceed with criminal case. That has been documented, that the ability of the camera to provide that additional piece of evidence in court is critical."
He added there is discussion of turning the camera off under certain circumstances.
