NRP Issue Warning of Taxi Scam

The NRP is issuing a warning about a taxi scam.

This fraud consists of two scammers, one posing as a taxi driver, and the other posing as a customer.

The scam consists of the driver and customer pretending to argue over how to pay, with the driver saying that due to COVID-19, cash is not accepted.

The fake customer then asks a victim to pay with a debit card and gives them the cash.

While the victim is entering their pin, which is recorded, the customer distracts them so they won't notice the driver handing them a different debit card.

The debit card is then used by the two suspects, until the victim becomes aware of what happened.

If you have been a victim of such a scam and experienced a financial loss, you can call the NRP non emergency line at 905-688-4111

Anyone who has been a victim but didn't lose any money can report what happened to either Phonebusters at 1-888-495-8501 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
