NRP Encouraging Parents to Help Teens Become Good Drivers

The NRP is offering some advice to parents and teenagers as part of National Teen Driver Safety Week.

It's National Teen Driver Safety Week, and the NRP has some tips to help your teenager become a safe and cautious driver.

We spoke with Constable Barry Ravenuk, who says it's important for parents to chat with their teens about the consequences of impaired driving.

"Impaired driving is the leading cause of criminal deaths in Canada. Parents have to have the conversation with their child so they understand the implications of drinking and driving."

He also advises parents to sign their kid up with an approved driving school, if they do decide to let them get their license.

Ravenuk says kids aged 16 to 19 are at a higher risk of collisions than other age groups, and he says there are numerous risk factors for young drivers, including speeding and lack of a seatbelt.

"With speeding, it's not just traveling above the designated speed limit, but also traveling too fast for the road conditions. So, for example, if the roads are wet or snow covered, slow down and drive according to the conditions of the day. Another risk factor is the lack of a seatbelt. Buckling up is the single most effective thing a driver can do to protect themself in the event of a collision."

Ravenuk also advises parents to practice safe driving techniques themselves, in order to provide a good example for their teens.
