NOTL Repeals Mask Bylaw in Favour of Provincial Mask Regulations

Niagara-on-the-Lake has removed its mask bylaw but masks are still mandatory in all indoor public spaces.

Council decided to repeal the bylaw during a special meeting on Wednesday in response to the province's mask order that was issued two weeks ago.

The Ford Government decided to make masks mandatory for all indoor public spaces across Ontario as of Saturday October 3rd.

Those with a medical condition and children under two-years-old are exempt.

Lord Mayor Betty says repealing the local bylaw will help provide some clarity for residents.

"The legal precedent is that the law with the strictest regulations and requirements, regardless of which level of government it comes from, is the law which prevails. In this case, the provincial requirements are in fact the strictest, making Council's decision to repeal the town's bylaw in favour and support of provincial regulations fairly straightforward."

She says the town will now follow the provincial regulations.
