Starting today, Fort Erie residents can book free taxi trips to the Port Colborne Urgent Care Centre.

The Niagara Region has announced a new transportation option for Fort Erie residents who need to go to the urgent care centre in Port Colborne.

Beginning today, Fort Erie residents in need of a ride to the Port Colborne Urgent Care Centre can get a free taxi ride by calling Niagara Regional Transit at  905-980-6000 ext. 3550 or toll-free: 1-800-263-7215 ext. 3550.

The call lines are available 24/7, and the Niagara Region will cover the cost of the trip.

Residents with a health emergency are still expected to call 911.

Officials note urgent care centres are for minor health issues such as cuts, sprains, minor asthma attacks or allergic reactions, coughs, colds and fever, minor abdominal pain, and ear, nose, throat and eye problems.

The service will remain in effect while the Fort Erie Urgent Care Centre remains closed.

Niagara Health closed the site on January 6th to redeploy  physicians and nurses to Emergency Departments in greater need.
