Police board adds citizen appointee
The Niagara Police Services Board has appointed a citizen to the board.
Nyarayi Kapisavanhu will sit on the board as a public representative.
She is the founder of the Advocating for Black Excellence Awards of Niagara and the Executive Director of TOES.
The news comes after the Niagara Region Anti-Racism Association asked council to pick someone of colour who has never been a police officer.
“It is my honour and privilege to serve on the Niagara Police Services Board where I will have the opportunity to use my skills and experience working with and in various sectors and communities, to meaningfully engage on Niagara’s growing and diverse community needs and best interests", Kapisavanhu says. " I look forward to working and collaborating with my colleagues on the Board, the Niagara Regional Police Service, community stakeholders and the residents of Niagara Region.”
Kapisavanhu was informed that she was the nominee selected by the Niagara Regional Police Board Public Representative Selection Panel on February 8th.
The Niagara Region Anti-Racism Association shared its letter to the selection panel on Twitter about an hour later.
Kapisavanhu's appointment was made official on February 23rd.
