There are 33 reported variant cases in Niagara.
Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Mustafa Hirji says many of the cases are linked to GTA travel, but some don't seem to have a clear source, which many mean community spread.
As reported by Thorold News, investigation results will determine what variant is at play in these cases.
Hirji reports that it appears that the doubling time of these cases is about 4 or 5 days.
He went on to say that while regular COVID-19 cases are down, variant cases seem to be the main spreaders right now.
Last week, there were six presumed variant cases in Niagara.
Hirji indicated that he's nervous that the province won't invoke the emergency brake on Niagara immediately, since the region just entered the red zone of the provincial COVID-19 framework today.
